I think this KAL is officially abandoned!

Unfortunately, the owner of this blog has disappeared, and I do hope she is ok!

If anyone is interested in starting a new KAL or needs assistance, or wants to share photos, come on over to my forums. There is a knucks subforum, so you can get assistance quickly, either from me or from one of my test-knitters.

Christmas Pressies

The two Knucks with the bags were for my god-daughter (purple)and one of my best friends (black).
The Green ones are mine and are the ones I mentioned before, where I extended the fingers to do a mendi pattern based on one I found on the net.
I also did a plain pair for my other best mates Hubby in alpaca.
I just have to finish 3 more pairs then I'm done, two like the black ones withe red flowers to match similar bags for both of my sisters-in-laws.
and a plain alpaca pair for my mums friend who works with horses at a shelter.
I've done all the fingers for them.
Just have to do the hands then I think I'm going to have a go at a different pattern ;o)

So this first pair, it a little bit of a cheater entry. I finished them in August with the embroidery on the fingers, but my husband really wanted the skulls embroidered on the hands like mine. So on our way to Virginia last week, I broke down and spent the two + hours embroidering them. I was not sure if he would wear the knucks when I made them, but I can proudly say that they have become a cold day staple in his wardrobe!

And when we were in Seattle, my dad was so jealous of his knucks and mine that the plain black pair is for my dad for Christmas! Trying to get all those presents knocked out before the holiday season kills me with work -- its a retail thing!

what's this about the joining row??

I have been hearing people stress about the joining row, and working it on three needles. There is no reason to work the joining row on three needles. I work it on five or even six if I have an extra laying around. I worried that somewhere in the editing, the pattern had changed to require a knit-on-three-needles row, but that is really not the case. I think either a) some people are misinterpreting the instructions or b) I am misinterpreting the stress.

So I made a thread here to discuss it:

I feel bad that poor Tonya has disappeared from our KAL and the stars are not being kept up, etc. I'm not officially a moderator of this blog, so there is nothing I can do. If you want to have more real-time chat about this pattern, go ahead and come over to my forum. Bring your photos!

2nd Pair Of Knucks

I finished my 2nd pair of knucks almost a week ago. I actually used the yarn that the pattern called for. My previous pair were done in wool ease. I have to admit that the Rowan Wool Cotton is so much softer. These knucks are going to my best friend.

Hey friends! As the Ultimate season is beginning to overlap with the "Holy crap it's cold in Connecticut!" season, I'm wearing my knucks to practice a lot. I'm now wondering about the logistics of knitting a few pairs for teammates. Thus, I'm wondering if anyone has used Knitpicks' Telemark for their Knucks, and if so, if one can get a pair of womens' sized knucks out of one ball (103 yds). Thanks!

.. I've managed to work out how to post my pic's.

Here are the two pairs I've finished so far, I even adapted the pattern to make them in to fingerfull gloves on another pair but have not quite finished the mendi style embroidery on them yet .

The Chug-a-bug pair are mine for wearing in my 1972 Old Gold VW Beetle on cold mornings as the wheel tends to be freezing cold.

The Mo Cara pair are for a friend and according to the English/Irish dictionary I found online Mo means My and Cara means Friends.

I had great fun doing them and have to get started on some more for xmas pressies.

These Really Are Addictive...

Here's a third pair for my mum...
I found that the heathered Cascade 220 was a bit thinner than the solid colors, and therefore I was able to get very close to gauge. I did end up using less rows for the fingers though. She plans to wear them at work so she didn't want embroidery. She told me that her boss likes to keep the window open during the winter for "fresh air!"

These are a secret surprise present for a close friend. They are a variation on the Kittyville hat and the Knucks, made as a matching set in Jaeger Extra Fine Merino in a charcoal colour, with embroidery in a pale purple Jaeger Alpaca 4ply. My daughter is modelling them for me, she really likes them. They are both super soft and warm - the hat is two held together of 4ply and dk and the Knucks are just the dk. The Purr/Hiss is obviously the cat version of Love/Hate.The tassles are much nicer than the original pom-poms, I think. I'm really really pleased with how these turned out :D

And here's the finished second set in green, also modelled by my super gorgeous daughter. :D

Boy, are my photos lousy. (Had to take them inside, so please excuse the variety of objects in the background!)

So-- these are a holiday present for a DJ friend who hosts shows on the local alternative station. Hence the slogan "BRIT *POP." (You can visit his weekly calendar blog if you promise not to tell!)

I opted for Cascade 220 because I felt like knitting something really chunky. It does make the Knuck look uneven, but I figure it'll felt with wear. Other modifications: I didn't like the way my usual cast-on looked at the finger ends, so I whipstitched them afterwards. And my favorite part... to chime with UK fashion...

I got to wear my multi's this morning and my husband got to wear his black ones with rock/roll on them!

I am not on the side bar yet, but when I get on there, please asterik (or however that is spelled!) me. I am so proud of my knucks -- and I have a bunch more pairs on the horizon, as soon as I am done with my bet on Saturday (see my blog for details). I really love my multis and may have to make more striped pairs - I got stopped four times this morning about them!

It took almost six weeks but among the unpacking, babywrangling and general Life Stuff I pushed toward finishing my Knucks. Unfortunately none of my photos are turning out clearly enough. It's overcast here today & I want to use natural light. I'll add a photo to this post when I get one.

They're not embroidered b/c I like them as-is. The coat I'll be wearing them with is a little busy. It's a rust-orange tweed with a plum-faux-fur collar (it must be seen) and the Knucks are bilberry (like the HARM NONE on the pattern page). Once I finish the two other KALs I'm doing (Fetching and Dishcloth) I am definitely making another pair of Knucks (in an orangey-rust) for embroidering (maybe w/ the bilberry yarn even).

I did have the same problem w/ the BO on the second Knuck as with the first: it's tight. As Pamela said, it'll lossen w/ wear. I got frustrated w/ the second being even tighter than the first and I tried to stretch it and I snapped my yarn! Luckily it was easy to fix and it doesn't show. I love the lace cuff though and I might try the sewn bind off, as she suggested, with the orange pair.

This is going to be a favorite pattern for many years to come :)

I wove in the strands while we watched a movie last night! I still have the embroidery to do, so a picture will come after that. I used Nature Spun from Browns Sheep...and it was a size 5 instead of a size 4, but as they fit with a little ease, I am safe (or safer) in case they adjust their size when they are washed.

The top set are in charcoal. I just need to do the weaving in and the embroidery.

They went so quickly and easily I've already started knitting up a second set in green. I've almost finished the first knuck and will hopefully cast on for the second later today :D

okay, I am working on a second pair of the Knucks for my son, Elliott. He is 4 and he is a rock star. His favorite color is red, and he plans on donning the Knucks when he rides his bike (it has training wheels, which aren't tough, but don't tell him that!) and when he rocks the mini drum set in the basement. Now Mom just needs to get 'er done!

Ok, so I did the embroidery... I was very tempted to put "I (heart) my geek," but in the end I decided it would be more fun to have some knitting bling...

I had to rip some of it out a few times, but I think it looks ok now... I was going to try and make the thread coming from the word "yarn" look like it was coming from a ball of unraveling yarn, but that didn't really work out so here's what I ended up with. I like it, it's cute, and it's all chain stitch which wasn't too hard to play around with.

Well, that's two pairs complete for me... Does that mean I can have a couple of stars next to my name now? Pretty please?

Hi all-- I'm partway through my first Knuck, and I wanted to know:

1- If I played fast and loose and knit the fingers slightly different lengths, do you think I can hide that with whipstitching or something?

2- Is the palm supposed to look really hugely long? I'm making a man's pair, so I can't compare it to my own palm. I knit an extra quarter-inch down to the thumb, figuring it would be no big deal, but now with the thumb gusset almost done boy does the palm look big. It measures 6" from the finger join to approx. 1/2" from the wrist.

2nd Pair!

Here are the Knucks finished for my sister - she did not want the embroidery so they are complete. I used Tatamy Tweed in Evergreen by Kraemer Yarns which is a cotton/acrylic blend that my sister picked out herself!

This time around I found a much easier and more efficient way to close up the holes - I don't know what I did on my own pair but I do remember there was no particular method and I ended up still having a few small not-too-noticable holes afterward. The following is more like closing the top of a hat, leaves no holes to speak of, and is probably what I was supposed to do in the first place!
First I found the closest 4 stitches to the center - since it looks like the yarn tail comes out of the middle of one of these stitches, I first thread it through the next stitch on the same finger... (in this pic I'm doing it on the thumb. Please excuse the leg shots in the next few photos - I promise I'm wearing shorts and the 8 month pregnant belly is trying its very best to hide them.)

Then, I would thread the needle through the opposite two stitches.... Finally, I would thread it through the stitch that the yarn tail came out of before pulling the whole thing closed... Easy, huh? Then I'd just poke the yarn through to the other side and waited until I had all the holes closed before turning the Knuck inside out to weave in the ends. Has everyone already been doing it this way, or was this helpful to someone?

I promise I'm going to start the embroidery on my own pair now - no really... I need to do it before the baby comes! I think I'll be taking my Knucks with me to meet the Yarn Harlot tonight in Seattle. :)

monday - made the multi's while traveling - don't they look nice with the hotel ice bucket?

tuesday - back to the airport - began the black knucks - slept on the plane - didn't get too far . . .

wednesday - home again, home again!! Finished the first black knuck on the short plane ride

thursday - started the second black knuck at the store -- shown on the dressing room floor (bad employee!)

friday - knitting the second black knuck in my favorite new sweatshirt. This skull hoodie thing ROCKS! And the knuck is turning out rather well.

I completed my second pair of Knucks two days ago. My mom saw my original pair of Knucks and LOVED them and wanted her own pair. She had wanted a pair of fingerless gloves (or half-finger gloves) for quilting, but could never find a pair that had the thumb uncovered. So when she saw the Knucks, she fell in love with them just as we all did!

I knit her pair using Patons Decor in the Secret Garden colourway. This ball was in my stash for awhile and I've long since lost the ball band. :) I knitted them in the child's measurements and using 4mm needles, and they gave her the perfect fit. The cuffs are still a little tight to put on (because I can't, for the life of me, cast off loosely!), but they still fit her perfectly! Of course, in my excitement to give them to her, I forgot to take a picture beforehand. *sigh* I'll have to ask for them back for a little while just for that purpose.

So, do I get my asterisks beside my name finally? :D Two down, who knows how many more to go! Happy Knuck Knitting, all!

P.S. I didn't do any embroidery on my mom's pair. I was thinking of putting "QUIL TER!" on them, and still might if she wants that, but she's not really a knuckle tattoo sort of woman. ;)

I got my LIVE LIFE knucks all knitted up, now I just need to figure out how I'm going to embroider these babies.

This is Rowan Felted Tweed in Bilberry. Size US4 needles. Ladies size knucks. I think I did 9 rows for the fingers, 8 rows for the pinky. I did 17 rows between the finger joining and the thumb joining. At first I did 20 rows there, but it cut into my thumb webbing too much. That's a tough distance to judge the first time - because once you join the thumb, that section magically gets longer.

I like the felted tweed a lot - it really helps camouflage any imperfections from the dpns.

I also finished up my daughter's knucks. She's showing off her mad karate skills in this picture. :) Originally, I totally effed the first one up without realizing it. I thought that the gauge was off, making the knuck really small, but really what happened was that I left out several rows in the thumb gusset stage. I only realized it when I finished the second knuck and it turned out way bigger than the first. So I had to rip out the first one and now they both match and the fit is just fine.

I'm planning on knitting up another pair for her BLAH BLAH knucks. I still need to pick up some yarn for those.

With unpacking and two younglings, I'm surprised I even cast on. Imagine my bliss today when I bound off!

I have a question for everyone: which BO are you doing? I did the single crochet BO and it made for a cuff with no real give. I have wide hands and the knucks fit beautifullly until that BO. Now I struggle to pull them on but I do like the way the cuff fits once it's on. I was wondering if I should try a different BO method next pair. Thoughts/experiences?

Hey, Knucks knitters --

I apologize to those that have sent emails requesting invites -- I will send them as soon as I can. I'm four days into the Kentucky State Fair and have been working between twelve and fifteen hours a day for the last week and a half, so my computer time is very minimal. I promise that I will take care of everything as soon as I have more than a couple of seconds at a computer.

In the meantime, keep knitting and I'm very sorry. If anyone would like to share administrative privilidges, let me know (although by the time I can get back to you on that my life will have returned to normal.)

I've finally finished my fiances Knucks! well minus the embroidery...he couldn't decide what he wanted on them and finally decided last night that he wants a skull and crossbones on both the knucks (on the top of the hand), but I don't have any white yarn or embroidery floss laying around so that'll have to wait till I can afford to buy some^_^ as you can tell all the threads are still hanging out that's because I don't finish it all up until I've finished the embroidery.
Now I'll be starting Davids sisters knucks and after that his mums so I'll be busy for a while hehe!

Thanks to the tips earlier, I've now finished the knitting part of knucks. I'm really pleased with how they turned out. I'm a little worried about starting the embroidery and ruining them! I've got two options for the writing, either 'luna moth' (my internet name) or 'geek chic'. Both would have a moth embroided on one hand and a moon on the other. I've got the cotton ready, just have to take a deep breath and get started!

The Knuck decreases are done on Knuck 1, and I did the textured rib cuff, and.... wasn't thrilled. Never one to leave a pattern absolutely alone - I decided on a modified version of ribbing, a cabled rib. I had 48 stitches in my round (I did the man size for my apparently biggish hands - hey, they DO grow them bigger in Texas!), and 48/6= 8. I did 8 2x2 cables with 2 purl stitches between, with a cable cross on every fourth row, and I'll likely make them longer than the pattern calls for, and cast off in pattern. Because I like a challenge. I'm just glad I know how to cable without a cable needle! I'll have a progess pic once I've got more than one repeat done, so you can actually.... you know, see PROGRESS. All told, though, I think the fit will be much better with the cabled, ribbed cuff, b/c I did the textured cuff, and it was TIGHT, with the crocheted bind off - which was SUPERtight, and let's just forget crab stitch ever existed, shall we? B/C I'm a lefty and... yeah. Just forget it ever existed.

I finished my first knuck today - yay! :) I ended up having to frog and re-knit most of this one because I originally made it way too long, but now it fits perfectly. :) I did have to improvise a bit at the bottom because I forgot to decrease at the thumb join - whoops!

This is the large size because I have gorilla hands, knit out of red heart super saver in ranch red on size 3 dpn's (my LYS is walmart, so I have to work with what's available - and cheap! :D) I'll admit that the small gauge combined with the yarn makes it a bit stiff, but I'm hoping it'll soften up once it's washed. It's really warm, though.

I plan to put "TOON GIRL" on them once I'm finished, probably in orange. :D

Knaked Knucks

I still have to do the finishing, and the embroidery, and its mate ... but here's my first Knuck, knitting stage completed! This is going to be my WORD GEEK pair.

The Beloved has requested a pair of his own -- I'm ordering some Felted Tweed in Cocoa for him, and Pine for a second pair of my own. (Although I'd also contemplated getting Carbon for him. Maybe I still will. I'm checking to see if my LYS owner can order it for me, and if she can't, I'll buy it online.) The current pair, meanwhile, is in something labeled Inca Fiber Concept that I'm told is alpaca, double-stranded. It's ever so gently fuzzy.

Now, I just need to figure out what color would be good for the embroidery. I believe I've had troubles with this sort of electric blue before ... nothing seems to match nicely with it. I'll probably take it to a craft/embroidery supply store and just hold threads against it until I come up with something good. (Of course, there's always white or gray, but I think I'd like to try for something other than the default.)

I do wish I'd made the fingers a bit shorter; it seemed like the right length until I finally got the glove assembled. (And as evidenced by the last sentence, I can type in 'em! Which is good, because I plan to use them for work, when the a/c gets too cold.) And the textured cuff? Pain. In. The. Rear, with all the transferring of stitches from one needle to another on row #3. (Maybe it's easier on DPNs -- I was using two circs.) But well worth it. I'll probably use it for the other pair(s). I also goofed on the crab stitch edging -- I stitched the wrong way 'round and got another row of single crochet -- but I still like it. And I lost two stitches along the way while doing the border -- my guess is that I either forgot to yo or the yo slipped off the needle without my noticing. Live and learn ...

But I'm overall quite happy. :-)

sarahs 1st and 2nd knucks

hey all
i finished the knitting part of my knucks a while ago. i really hate doing the finishing bits on my knitting so this morning i forced myself to sit down and sew up those little gaps between the fingers. it only took half an hour or so, i dont know why i put it off for so long!

anyway onto the knucks...

this is the first pair i made. its some kind of random yarn from my stash (i lost the ball band). i love the tweediness of these, especially the green and turquoise bits you can see in the close up.

heres the second pair. this is a mohair/wool blend and is super soft and super warm. perfect now that winter is almost over! (i'm an aussie)

and just to prove i'm not a big dork who walks around with mismatched knucks (although i am very likely to do such a thing)...

here they are hanging as pairs on my clothesline.

Stuck at thumb join

I'm stuck, can anyone give me any tips? I've just put the thumb onto the two needles, but don't know how to knit from here. The working yarn is before the 8 thumb stitches, so if I make a new stitch from the first thumb stitch (next to the stitch marker) I can't slip off the stitch as the other stitches are in the way. I know it'll be something stupid I'm doing, but can anyone help to save me from botching and frogging later today please?

Can you feel the excitement!? I have to admit, I learned a lot about knitting these little beauties. I learned I really don't like the finishing process...but now that I learned my mess ups on my first knuck, the second of the pair was much smoother. (I also wasn't watching a suspense movie so I didn't end up cutting the wrong threads...what an evening that was!) I put our "new" consolidated school's name on my pair. Chester Public Schools became Chester - Joplin - Inverness Public Schools...and there was NO way that would fit on any pair of Knucks. Our mascot went from the Coyotes to the Hawks...so the community has shortened it to the CJI Hawks. That fits! My next pair will be much quicker, and I"m ready to cast on!

Here are some pics of Knuck 1. Pay no attention to the strings hanging all willy-nilly. Those are for the finishing process.

I had some fits putting all the stitches on the needles to get started on the body of the mitt, it was TIGHT! but no needles were snapped in the making of these mitts. I'm to the part where I'm supposed to start the cuff, and I'm going to do the textured cuff, but I'm going to do a longer version than called for in the pattern and double it up. I figure an extra layer of knitted goodness on my pulsepoints would be making for the better warmness. I think I'll probably turn the gloves inside out once I start the second half of the cuff so that when I turn it over, it'll be that neato stitch pattern on the right side. :D Or maybe I'll just knit 2x2 ribbing until I want to fold the cuff over and then do the stitch pattern. The world is open to me! WEE!

the yarn is Encore DK (75% acrylic 25% wool) good for work b/c I can wash them readily. The yarn, since the flash is distorting it a little bit, is a dark burgundy wine/cranberry color. I just love it. Knitted on US 4 dpns.

Hi, I'm Stacie and I love this pattern. The first time I saw it, I became obsessed. What a great idea. Too many folks walk around giving free advertising space to mega-corps, I love the idea of wearing my message!! Anyhoo... I ramble... I bought yarn for Knucks, ok, enough for three pairs. I thought that would be a good start. Then I was hoping there was a KAL. I cast on my first pair on August 3rd. It was my b-day and I treated myself. I hired a babysitter and went yarn shopping!! YAY!! I'm finally done! The actual pair of Knucks were completed late last week, but I just finished the embroidery about 10 minutes ago. Here they are! And once again, please excuse the crappy webcam image:
Not too shabby, eh? I'm thinking of doing more embroidery on the backs of the Knucks, but I haven't decided yet. I just might get too excited and start on another pair, for me this time.

Can't wait to see more Knucks from everyone! Wheeee!

I'm looking at my pinky through pointer all attached to the needles...and I"m reminded more of a cow bra more than knucks. Those holes between the fingers will work themselves out..OR they will be magically erased when I weave in the tails...right? I've knit mittens from the cuff to the tip, so perhaps that is why I keep feeling I would be better off doing the fingers after the hand. A pic would help...but I just had to panic first.

Apparently I'm in the wrong KAL. I was under the impression this was just a generic "knucks" KAL and all patterns were welcome. Thanks for sharing the Fetching KAL with me.

I finally had the time to cast on for my first knucks. I'm using the Knitty pattern Fetching and I think they'll come along quickly if I keep working on them. I did see one part I'm a little worried about, but I won't panic until I actually reach that spot in the pattern.

I know we were supposed to cast on August 1st, but I had a baby shower gift that needed to be completed so everything else had to wait.

Yarn: Queensland Kathmandu Aran, color 134. I love the feel of the silk blended with the wool. Needle: Size 6 dpn. The guage was slightly bigger than what was called for so I had to adjust the number of stitches. I spritzed them with water and wore them for a little while to give them a custom fit. Now to figure out a design for the embroidery. I have started my second pair!!

My Knucks (for my daughter) are officially on the needles! I had to finish some projects before I could cast on...then I also needed to do some estate stuff for my mom, orthodontist stuff with the kids, harvest stuff for the hubby, and then actually have some time to sleep. NOW I am off and running! I can hardly wait until this first pair is done so that I can learn from my "mistakes" and then get to knitting for my husband's family for Christmas!

Textured cuff

I'm working on the second pair of Knucks and I've nearly finished the first glove and I wanted to do the textured cuff for a change, but I didn't know how to do the slip stitch, so I tried to find help online, but I couldn't find any good tutorial on how to do it. I did find a written tutorial, but it wasn't very good and after I tried to do one round I figured I still didn't get it, because it looked all bent and squashed LOL here's how I did it: I put the right needle into the first stitch of the round as if to knit and just slipped it onto the right needle, then I put the yarn infront and put the right needle into the second stitch as if to purl and then slipped it into the right needle aswell, then I put the yarn to the back again, then I knit a stitch, then I passed the first slipped stitch over the 2 stitches (the stitch I slipped purlwise and the knit stitch). I hope that made sence. I'm pretty sure I'm doing it absolutely wrong lol so could somebody pleaseeee tell me how to do it right or maybe give me a link with a good tutorial if you know one? I feel like such an idiot right now.
btw I decided to use the ribbed cuff again for now because I want them finished but I'd really like to use the textured cuff on the next pair *sigh*.

Done the first Knuck

Well, I'm done the first Knuck in the pair, and I must say, I'm less than happy. (all together now: awwwwwwwwwwwww ;) ) As I mentioned in a previous post, the yarn I decided to use was too light weight, so they're turning out to be too small for me. That's okay though; I have no problem giving these ones to someone else.

The main problem is my skill (or lack thereof) with the dpns. You see, I'm the person who hates using dpns so much that she converts all her sock patterns so they can be done on two needles. So I knew Knucks was going to be a challenge for me. As it stands now, I can see in my work where the divides between needles were (the knitting is not as tight), so that's a disappointment. I think if I were using heavier yarn, this might not be so obvious, so I am committed to trying another pair of Knucks once I'm done this one. I also hope that when I do the embroidery, I can cover this up a bit. We'll see.

Anyway, that's my story! I'll post a pick when the other Knuck is done. Caio!

Hi all,
I'm working on the cuff of my second Knuck! Then, onto finishing and (yikes!) the embroidery.I've got a few things to think about for next time. I didn't realize this until it was too late, but while adding the thumb to the one I'm working on, I didn't turn the finishing strand inward so I could sew up the gap later. Oops - I guess I'll have to work it around somehow or use a separate strand. Also, I'm wondering if I did my crab stitch edging too tight on the first one since it seems to want to roll - is it supposed to do that? Finally, I'm thinking I should have made the tubes for the pinkie fingers a wee bit shorter... but other than that they fit wonderfully!So, it looks like I'll be making a second pair for my sister, and it should go even more quickly since she wants ribbing and no embroidery on hers. She also wants green... does anyone know if the Rowan Felted Tweed comes in green? I do have a dk cotton/acrylic tweed in green that might work...

A little knucklet

Here's the first of my daughter's Knucks. This is Dreambaby DK (50% acrylic/50% nylon) knitted with size US4's. The hand is 5-years-old. :) I used the kid's size, and this just fits her. She really has to yank it on. And, in retrospect, I should've made the pinky finger one row shorter than the rest - I think that would've looked more in proportion with these little hands.

I don't know that I'll embroider these. I'll likely make her another pair with some thicker, nicer yarn, and maybe they'll have room to grow. These'll just be my practice Knucks. :)

Knitting Injury

Well, I have one knuck finished, but I have suffered a knitting releated injury. I've only been knitting since about April. Apparantly the way I have been holding my dpns has been putting pressure on my rotator cuff and it decided to start fighting back by sending pain into my upper left arm. So, I'm in physical therapy for at least the next two weeks to get things worked back out and no knitting in the meantime! I'm devasted but am learning how to spin on a top whorl spindle and picked up my cross-stitch again to keep me busy. I'll have to learn a new way to hold my dpns or learn how to do two circs instead to finish the second knuck! Here's a pic of the first one. I bond of a little too tight so it's kind of hard to get on and off but other than that it turned out ok.

No, really, I do! Everyone's knucks look so great, first I want this yarn, in this color, then I see another pair, another yarn, in another color, I can't make up my mind! Arrrg!

Maybe mine will say GRRR ARGH (If you ever watched Buffy or Angel, you may remember that from the very end of the end credits. Or maybe you had to be there, and be as silly as I am to remember. It always made me laugh.)

Well, I'm about to depart to NYC for a week (Aug. 1-10). If I can't find yarn there, God help me. Or maybe I'll actually finally card and spin up some of our llama fleece for this project when I get back, I'm just worried that my handspinning skills aren't yet up to a project like this.

Finally, I had time to take some pictures so here are my two "finished" knucks...I say "finished" because I am still working on the third...since the first one's thumb gusset is not identical to the second (a pattern misunderstanding of sorts the first time through...)

Anyway, without further ado...

I knitted with Rowan Felted Tweed in Treacle which I LOVED. And even though they look mismatched, they aren't. The right one's just been tried on a bit more and has stretched out a bit.

I plan to embroider them once I get the third one done - call me a perfectionist but that thumb gusset bugs me :)

I've been knitting off and on for years, but this will be my first-ever knit-along. I stumbled across the pattern and it was so cute, and then I saw the designer and realized, "hey! I know her!" Pamela is in my babywearing group, you see.

Oh! So I'm Beth. Mom of two, and obsessive/compulsive project-starter. Figured it couldn't hurt to add one more. :)

I'm trying to come up with some sayings for my knucks. I'm thinking maybe "LIVE LIFE" with some cute embroidery on it - some sort of nature-y scene. I was hoping for a nice brown, but I didn't see any I liked in the Rowan felted tweed at the LYS. So I ended up with the purple. I could always make another pair if I find the brown.

I also got some yarn to make my 5-yr-old daughter some, and I'm trying to think of something cool to say on hers. All I've come up with is "PRIN CESS" but I'd really like to find something that conveys a strength of hers. I'm annoyed at the yarn store clerk for steering my daughter toward this ucky multi-pastel baby yarn, so now I'm stuck knitting it. lol So she might end up with two pairs too.

Since my husbands a geek, I was trying to think of stuff for geek knucks. I love the "OMG! WTF?" from the suggestion list. So I came up with "stfu n00b" or "rtfm n00b". But they don't really fit my husband's friendly personality. lol But some other geek might like them.

Hi all. I'm a little behind some of you b/c of my move but I finally CO and I finished the first little thumb thingy. I've started the pinky.

With two little ones, boxes to unpack and a third birthday party to plan and hold, I'm suprised I'm as far as I am. I may have one finished by Christmastime. I'm using the Rowan felted tweed in the purple shade -- the same as the "harm none" Knucks in the pattern. I may try embroidery on mine as well; I loved that pair.

Still haven't decided what my Knucks will say. I think they'll tell me :)

Okay, so I finished another pair of knucks. They're really a pretty fun pattern, what can I say? These ones are a bad color for me, but they will look great on their intended recipient. A sad story, though, I tried to embroider retro blue and orange flowers with lazy daisy stitch, and it looked awful. So these knucks are plain. Failing at the embroidery almost broke my heart... At least DMC floss is cheap.

These are also made out of Elisabeth Lavold silky wool, just like my first pair.

I think I have two more pairs in the works; one for a friend, and finally one for me. After that, I'll probably be all knucked out.

I've been MIA for a few days . . . my boy got his (our?) floors refinished, so I've been helping move furniture and get everything in line, and for some reason the air conditioning stopped working, so I spent Sunday night in a non-airconditioned, polyurathane scented house. All is well now, and I'm happy to see all of the Knucks progress! As you can imagine, I haven't been knitting much, but I do have one Knuck and three fingers complete -- pictures coming soon! (I posted one on PRKG's.) Everyone loves the Knucks, so I've gotten requests to knit three more pairs . . . one girl gave me some yarn and asked me to make Knucks out of 'em, and I definitely want more pairs for myself. If I just sat down and knit, they'd go pretty quickly but I keep having to stop and start.

Today I received an email from Knucks designer Pamela with a link to the Knucks Gallery on Pamela's website for her biz, Wooly Wonder. So, promote Pamela, surf over to her site, and submit your finished Knucks pictures.

Casting On!

Hi all!
I finally cast on this evening in the Bilberry Rowan Felted Tweed and I love how gorgeous this yarn is... I'm hoping to get all the knuck parts finished by tomorrow so I can join them together at the Mariners Stitch 'N' Pitch game! Since I have pretty chubby fingers I had to modify the pattern a little - I cast on the same number of stitches for my pinky and ring fingers, but my first two fingers ended up being the same as my thumb. I also figured out an easy way to "label" each knuck as I finish them - I've been putting knots in the waste yarn. For example 1 knot for the thumb, 3 knots for the middle finger, and 5 knots for the little one. Here's what I mean...
What have other people been doing?

YAY! I know it took forever, but my first knuck is finished!!!

It was a little harder than i expected... Hopefully my joins will look better on the second one. I decided to modify the textured stitch for the edge, and just bind it off. It made the opening a little tight, but i don't mind if it's sorta snug. I'm going to cast on my second one tomarrow hopefully.

Why two? Because once done with the first one, I fully realized what my issues were and they had a LOT to do with how I joined the thumb although it really didn't affect the fit...the join line was just more catty-corner than straight. Anywho...I started the next one, intent to follow the pattern and so far so good. Hopefully I can coax a third glove out of what's left of the Rowan Felted Tweed ball.

I got pretty much to the cuff yesterday (from finger join to cuff) and I think that's pretty cool in and of itself!

WOOHOO I've finally finished my knucks! well the knitting part anyway! I'm going to start the embroidery tonight...still thinking about what to put on them...either KNIT NERD, KNIT GEEK, ROCK GEEK or FELT THIS^_^
I've already got some requests for Knucks so these are deffinatly not my last! I have to say that I'm really proud of myself just for the fact that I actually managed to knit them without any problems...I had to figure out how to cast on with dpns in the beginning, but after that I was fine so YAY for me!

I can't wait till it cools down so I can actually wear them!

i started my first pair a week ago...it's mainly my portable, at-work project so the going is a little slow, but i'm almost done with the first glove. this picture is from a few days ago...

i'm using rowan felted tweed in phantom. this pair is for my boyfriend. he requested some gloves like this like, last winter, and when i saw the pattern i knew i had to make them for him. i don't know yet if they will have embroidery...only if he can think of something clever he wants on them.

i am just about to start the ribbing on the cuff for these, so the first will be done very soon!

and i'm already planning the second pair for myself...

I think I've chosen a yarn that is too light. I bought yarn that called for 3.5mm needles when I think the trick was to use yarn that actually called for larger needles. Am I right? I'm quite sure this will result in Knucks that are too small for me, but I'm not too worried. I will be happy to give this pair away to friends.

Been slowly working on this one. This is the Noro silk garden. I knit up the men's size and its a bit too large for my hand even! I have large hands and I'm unsure if I just wanna frog the whole thing or not...I mean, we need to be happy with our wares, right?
This silk garden looks really similar to the felted tweed.. Has anyone used both yarns to compare?

I finally CO for my knucks at about 10 P.M. last night, and worked the thumb and the little finger. I would have made a lot more progress, but as I was transfering the little finger to waste yarn I dropped needle full of stitches (okay, so it was only 3). It woulda been okay except for when I was trying to pick them back up, my best friend took advantage of the fact that I had a bit of plumber butt and put a Sharpie down the back of my pants, which made me completely screw up the little finger so I had to re-knit it. I'm using Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece in Robin's Egg Blue:

I've been on a huge pink and light blue kick lately; don't hate on the fact that those are baby colors.

My knucks are going to say ROCK on one hand and ROLL on the other . . . I think.

I get to start my knucks today! I was kinda stuck, because the needles I needed were in a pair of socks. I'm gonna cast on tonight when i get home from work. I'm using Rowan Cashsoft DK in Mist from the ol' stash. It's 57% extra fine merino, 33% microfiber and 10% cashmere. It's super duper soft :-) I originally bought it for some christmas gifts last year but it was a lil' too yummy to give up. Everyone's progress is amazing! They all look great!

Thumbkind of Issues

Look, I am not the BEST knitter but I AM a diligent knitter. After a terrible start, I managed to figure out how to knit socks so I figured I could AT LEAST do as well with the Knucks. So...I ordered the Rowan Felted Tweed in Treacle for me and Bilberry for a pair for my friend...and I set off.

I had issues joining the fingers although once I started having issues with the thumb, I kind of understood what I needed to do with the fingers. What I DID worked and you can't see any difference...but the thumb, ah, the thumb...that I am not so sure of.

I knit it shut the first go round and had to deknit it loose again...and start over whereby I dropped MANY a stitch...I think I have those all back and accounted for. The second time through I think I figured it out AND figured out my finger issues as well but now I am KIND of worried about the gusset. I have never really USED stitch markers before...do I have these on the needle and just pass them along? If so...I am fairly sure they're in the right spot and if not, at least they're equidistant from one another so I think the gusset will come out even.

Any thumbly advice will be appreciated!!!

I finished my first Knuck, and I'm really proud of the way it turned out. It's really nice, my stitches look nice and even and perfect and they look really professional, so I'm a Happy Camper!! They really arent BRIGHT red like the Picture, the color is off. The color is more of a dark red or Crimson. I still can't decided if I want mine to say anything. I'm thinking of just one little heart on my right middle finger (as a tribute to my favorite musician Billy Joe Armstrong, who has a real tattoo of a heart there). Hrm, I'll keep thinking.

Hi, this is my first knitalong, and I've already jumped the gun. I'm using Jamieson's shetland wool DK in Rosewood, which is like a dark turquoise with gold/copper highlights. Basically, it's a different color every time I look (gaze?) at it. I have one glove knit but not tatted, and here it is, clawing at a box of cheez-its. Oh, and I am wearing pants in this picture.

I'm so thrilled to be here. I'm gathering my materials to head off into the camper with me so that I can work on my first pair while I'm camped at the county fair with my family. The kids have animals in 4H so we get to go live by the barns in order to take care of their steers. Now I have something fun and portable to take with me!

I have a pair of mittens I am entering in the fair, but those were knit from the cuff up...I've never done gloves. These will even feel as if I am knitting in reverse. I can hardly wait!

Well, I've already finished a pair of knucks. I heard about this KAL because Pamela herself said I might be interested when I submitted my photos to her. So, here I am! These particular knucks have already been posted all over the internet and back, so I won't ramble on too much about them.

My fiance did not want embroidery.

They are done out of Elisabeth Lavold Silky Wool, and I have exactly two more colors of it in mind for friends (who will get some fancy pants embroidery). Maybe then a pair for myself? I have a feeling I will end up making no fewer than three pairs.

My Finished Knucks

I finally finished my pair of Knucks this evening. They turned out very cute and I love them.

I used #US 4 double pointed needles, 1 skein of LB Wool Ease in Chocolate Brown and the medium size from the pattern. The embroidery part was done in a half-used skein of Caron Simply soft in Petal Pink.

"Knit Lani" is my blog name and I thought it would be cute to make some Knucks with my name on them. Ok, I admit that my embroider skills are not fabulous...I am relieved to be done with these. YAY! I will make a second pair soon.

My "Knit" Knuck

I have completed my first Knuck of the pair. I still have to make the second one, of course. I just wanted to share the progress. You will have to excuse my "not so great" embroidery there. It was a first try. I am sure it will look better with my second pair, down the road.

In case your wondering...my first pair of Knucks will say "KNIT LANI." It's my blog name. LOL! It seemed appropriate at the time.

I am using medium size, LB Wool Ease (color is chocolate brown) and # 4 dpn's for mine. It worked great. It fits and they will be quite warm in the winter months.

Posting Problems

Okay, a lot (well, some) people have experienced problems with posting. In one case, I just completely overlooked the email (sorry, Petra!). However, I just wanted to explain how the membership thing works for people that are having problems:

Step 1. You send me an email (tksext01@louisville.edu) with your name, e-mail address & a link to a blog. If I do not have your email address, I can't add you, so make sure to type it out in the body of the message, because sometimes it doesn't appear in the "from" line.

Step 2. I enter your name into blogthings, and you get an email inviting you to join the blog. If you follow the directions in the email, you should have no problems with posting.

Step 3. To post, go to your dashboard. Knucks KAL should appear under the blogs category. Then just create a new post :)

One person having difficulties has already confirmed the invitation, so I'm not sure why she can't post. Otherwise, if you still have trouble after accepting the invitation, let me know and I'll try my best to fix whatever the issue is. I want everyone to be able to post so we can get those Knucks updates!

Any blogger vetrans are free to add to this post.

Okay, I'm jealous -- CO date changed! & PRIZES :)

I'm begining to think a start date of August 1 is stupid . . . that's waaaaaaaay too long from now. So, the new CO date will be July 17 -- that's Monday. That gives everyone the weekend for buying yarn, which I desperately need to do. If I can find any of the Rowan Tweed, that's definitely what I want to knit with, but I may have to substitute.

As for prizes, there are going to be two offered, out of the goodness of my heart (and because these Knucks are so darn exciting. And DARN CUTE. I love how every eight-letter phrase becomes a potential Knucks message.) Since these knit up fast, I want to offer an award for the person that knits up the most Knucks between July 17 anddddddd . . . December 25. That way, any Knucks that are created for Christmas presents can be counted. To be in the running, post each finished pair of Knucks in a post with the title "Tawnyatay's 1st Knucks" or "Tawnyatay's 22nd Knucks" so it's easy to keep track of WHO has finished a pair and HOW MANY they have compeleted. Also on December 25 (actually, probably sometime thereafter), I will place the name of each person who has completed a pair of Knucks into a drawing so that everyone has a chance of being a lucky winner. The winners will receive something snazzy for their stash! If people are still knocking out Knucks at the end of December, I might have another drawing in March or something.

In the meantime, I love the progress that everyone has made so far. I plan to buy yarn on Saturday. I've actually never used dpns until yesterday -- I started on some socks, which I'll post on my blog. My theory is that Knucks have to be easier than socks, because you don't have to turn any heels, although the join could be interesting.

First Knucks Post

Hi everyone, I guess I will be the first one to share an entry on this cool knit-along. I snapped a "not so great" photo of my first knucks progress in the pair. I have never knit any glove-like items in my two and a half year knit-career. They always seemed fussy and made me a bit nervous. So, I am giving this a whirl.

So far, so good. The finger tubes were easy to make. I zoomed through that part of it within an hour. The problem I ran into was connecting the finger tubes on two needles. I almost had stitches slip off the one end, as I was trying to get stitches from the other end on the needle. It was a mess. I managed to get it though. I just wanted to give you all a heads up to be careful at that point of the pattern. I am working evenly on the 1.75 inches before the thumb attachment currently.

I will share more of my mishaps, or progress in a later entry. For now...I made it past the fingers. WHEW! I think I can breathe for a bit now.

I was out of town for the weekend, and when I came back to my computer there were 13 e-mails from people who wanna knit knucks! We're up to fifteen members in just a few days.

Remember the August 1 cast-on date, but again, it's cool if you start early, and post pictures of your progress so the rest of us see what we have to look forward to! Also, if you have any trouble with the invitation to join the blog, send me another e-mail or leave a comment.

Knucks Kickoff!

Okay, ladies . . . time to buy some yarn, bust out the double-pointed needles, and begin the Knucks KAL!

Official cast-on date will be (tenatively) August 1, but if you want to cheat and start early, I won't hate :) That gives us three weeks for members to sign up and yarn to be procured.

So how do you become a member? Easy. Just e-mail me at tksext01@louisville.edu and I will add you to the blog. Please include your name or screen name, your email address, and your blog so I can link it on the sidebar. You can also include ideas for 8-letter phrases to embroider on those knucks, like "Punk Girl" or whatever you choose.

The designer of Knucks, Pamela Grossman, is happy to support our KAL. She is going to promote our KAL on her forums and blog. She has already posted about our KAL on her blog, so we love Pamela!
